I have worked in the Micro finance industry as branch manager for the past 15 years. I successfully started up the branch and increased the client base to the point where additional personnel were required. At this point business became more formalized and I have been BCF Sasolburg branch manager ever since. Under my supervision and advice the branch became very profitable and my branch won numerous awards for best branch of the month, highest profits, and managed to exceed a number of yearly targets set by management. Over the past 3 years my branch also received the best audits in the region. Due to limited positions in the company and my responsibilities towards my children’s extramural activities, I was not able to apply for positions out of town. I could therefore not move up the corporate ladder and decided to enroll at Unisa for my BA General degree. Currently I need one module to complete my first year. The subjects that I passed are Argeology, Anthropology, Geography, Tourism, Afrikaans literature, Biblical Argeology and HIV/AIDS counselling. During this period I have worked with people at all levels of society and learned how to deal with challenges, not only typical to the finance industry, but also those of people in need in general.
I realized that I can do better than to stagnate as branch manager and trusted that I can start up a new business again, but this time for myself.
I served as an intern over the period 1994 and 1995 at Marietjie Steyn Properties in Vaalpark and was reasonably successful as agent for someone else and here I saw my opportunity and decided to enter the property market once again.
In 2007, I established the company Magic Cottage Properties Pty Ltd. and started advertising my business, listing properties and taking out clients after hours. Although this was the time when the property market was in a slump, I still managed to get the business off the ground and in 2009 I negotiated for a 5/8 workday at BCF to allow me to spend more time in my business. Currently I am at the point where only my rental income exceeds my salary and I need to make the decision to resign my job at BCF.
Cleary since 1995 a lot has changed and I need applied knowledge to empower me to stay ahead of the challenges of the property market. Enrolling for the NQF5 diploma will allow me the opportunity to take my business to a new level.
In August 2011 I enrolled in a SMME programme sponsored by Lusa Community Chest. After completing my NQF 5 qualification successfully this program are taking me to a next level of business leadership.
